We would like to welcome you to Duquesne University's Summer
2008 Guitar & Bass Workshop Web Page. An exciting week of musical
learning and sharing lies ahead of you and we hope this information will
answer any questions you may have. Also, we will be announcing a Fender
Musical Instrument special guest this summer. Past guitar greats have
included Vinnie Moore, Stu Hamm, Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, Charlie Byrd,
Carl Verheyen.
Electives:
Each participant can select from elective offerings that allow a customized
afternoon class schedule.
Costs:
Early enrollment is $425; Regular enrollment $475 after July 7, 2008.
A $50 non-refundable deposit is required for all enrollments. All charges
include enrollment and workshop book and handouts.
Housing:
Duquesne University offers on-campus dormitory housing. For more details,
check the box on your registration form and information will sent to you.
Accommodations:
If you requested on-campus housing a contract and information has been
included in this packet. Please complete the contract and return it to
the Office of Residence Life in the envelope provided. All rooms are air-conditioned
and residents will have access to the full range of athletic and recreational
facilities on campus.
Meals:
Meals for commuters are available at the cafeteria on campus at a reasonable
cost. There are also several local restaurants within a 5-minute walk
of the Music School. Snack and beverage machines are located in the Music
School lounge.
Parking:
Parking for the workshop will be Available in the Forbes Avenue Parking
Garage. Parking permits can be obtained for the week of the workshop.
What to Bring:
In order to make the most effective use of your time and efforts at the
workshop, we suggest you bring the following items, please label everything
w/ your name:
- Notebook, music staff paper, pen and pencil
- Extra Guitar strings
- Extra guitar supplies that you normally use
- A small tape recorder for recording lectures is permitted; bring extra
blank tapes and batteries and/or extension cord.
- Completed Student Evaluation Form
- Electric guitarists: Small practice amp, 25 watts or less, and an
extra guitar cord. Do not bring your stack, as you will be moving between
classrooms.
- Classical guitarists: Music for pieces that you are currently performing
or studying.
- The use of a gig bag, backpack or briefcase is suggested for keeping
supplies and materials organized and handy.
The Duquesne University Bookstore, located in the Power Center, is open
weekdays from 8:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Supplies such as paper and pencils,
guitar strings (limited selection), batteries, blank tapes, magazines and
newspapers, snacks, toiletries, film and school memorabilia are available
for purchase.
Final Registration, Orientation and Schedule:
Final registration for the workshop will be on Monday, July 21 from 8:15
A.M. to 9:00 A.M. in front of room 322 of the School of Music and an orientation
beginning at 9:00 A.M. in room 206. Please be prompt; student class placement
will be determined by completing a self-evaluation form prior to the orientation
session. If, after your first session, you feel you need to go to a different
skill level, tell the instructor and he or she will help you find an appropriate
level.
There will be elective classes that will be offered each afternoon so that
the students can select individual specialized areas he or she wishes to
pursue. Each elective class will be offered two times during the week to
avoid conflicts with other electives. Elective instructors will give a brief
summary of their elective class at orientation.
The basic schedule (subject to change) for the week is as follows:
- 9:00 A.M.-Noon: Classes Summer Faculty Clinicians
- Noon-1:00 P.M.: Lunch / Study, Practice time
- 1:00 - 3:00 P.M.: Masterclasses "Featured Clinicians"
- 3:00 - 5:00 P.M.: Electives
- 6:00 - 7:00 P.M.: Dinner/Practice Time
- 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.: Concerts: Faculty / Clinicians
- Thursday, July 24: Participants Concert - 7:00 P.M. - Recital Hall
- Friday, July 25: morning classes, after noon concert and certificates.
Workshop finished approx. 3:00pm - Friday afternoon.
A detailed schedule of events will be available at registration.
Participants Staying on Campus will need to bring the following items:
- Towels
- Alarm Clock
- Personal toilet articles
- Radio or tape player, if desired
- Dress is casual, with appropriately neat clothing required for evening
concerts. The Music School is air-conditioned and tends to be cool.
- Umbrella and light jacket
- Pocket money
- Students under age 18 must be in dorms by 11:00 P.M. each evening.
- Check-in Time for dorm residents is Sunday, July 20 from 3:00 P.M.
to 5:00 P.M. at TBA Dormitory (see enclosed map). A faculty member will
be present to greet students and answer any questions.
Summer 2008 Guitar & Bass Workshop Guidelines:
- Workshop name badges will be distributed at final registration and must
be worn for classroom admittance; No exceptions. A fee of $5 will be charged
for replacement of a lost badge.
- Workshop name badges must be shown at the front desk for admittance
into the dormitories.
- Workshop book will be distributed on Monday, July 21 at orientation.
A fee of $25 will be charged for replacement of a lost book.
- A memo board will be located outside of room 1E for phone messages
to students and special announcements.
- Practice rooms will be available until 10:00 P.M. in the Music School.
As a courtesy to other residents in the dormitory, please do not use your
amplifiers in the dorm rooms. Headphone amps are best.
- Non-prescription drugs and/or alcohol are expressly forbidden on campus.

who creates or is involved in behavior problems ~
