Classes

MAJORS:

Jazz, Classical, Fingerstyle, Rock/Blues, Electric and Acoustic (upright) Bass, Song Writing/Composition. Open to all guitar and bass enthusiasts, professional and non-professional.

CLASS OVERVIEW/MAJOR:

Jazz Guitar Studies:
Arranging for the solo jazz guitar; the importance of modal and harmonic improvisation; the art of rhythm section-comping; chord theory and mastering scale usage; idiomatic jazz guitar techniques e.g. walking bass lines for rhythm changes, and standards. Styles: swing, bebop, modal, Brazilian and fusion.

Classical Guitar Studies:
The classical guitar module includes one week of intensive study in the following areas. Classical Guitar technique, reading, music memorization, phrasing and performance development.

Fingerstyle Guitar Studies:
Various styles of acoustic guitar accompaniment and soloing; approaches to mastering right and left hand technique; artificial harmonics; finger picking and flat picking usage; alternate tunings; intros and endings, developing successful approaches to repertoire; and more.

Basic Guitar:
A Workshop presenting basic skills; correct left- and right-hand positions; special exercises to accelerate the learning the guitar; fundamentals of music; basic music theory; reading music, getting started with chords; rhythm patterns and strums; successful practice techniques; and much more.

Electric/Acoustic Bass:
Workshops pertaining to all bass styles; solo bass line construction, walking and slapping bass techniques; creating lines from chord changes; a guide to sight-reading, theory; the bass and it's role in the rhythm section (working with the drummer), and much more.

Rock Guitar Studies; Levels:
Understanding of scale applications; pentatonic scale usage; the art of string bending; turnarounds; the blues musical form. techniques for greater fret-board utilization; speed exercises; artificial harmonics; tapping (two-handed guitar): the theory behind technique, and how to incorporate it into your playing.
 
Contemporary Song Writing and Composition:
Learn how to tap the creative powers within you to develop your own musical understanding and expression. Study of a wide array of contemporary and song writing techniques such as: in-class writing, listening and analysis of compositional materials. The instructors, Diane Ponzio will guide you to create and perform your own compositions in this major. (This major is open to all levels)
